Yes! I Want To Study Smarter And Play Harder!

If you’re starting university, then you might be feeling apprehensive about how to adapt your study techniques and plan your learning on your own.

You don’t know what Uni will be like, but you’ve heard that its a big leap from where you are now. Or perhaps you've been told it'll be easy? Or maybe you’re not sure if you will fit in.

This is for you if…

  • You’ve heard from friends, family and teachers that it will be a step up, it will be harder, and that university is only for intellectuals!

  • You’re worried about fitting in or feel you’re not smart enough!

  • You haven’t got anyone to ask about what Uni is like.

  • You’re worried about balancing study with life!

  • You’re bad at planning, and don’t like to take control.

Many students think that if they work hard and use the same study techniques they used at college, they will also do well at University. But this leads to 2 mistakes.

Mistake 1: Not going beyond the Specification

At University knowledge is dealt with in a different way. You no longer learn what’s in text-books and stop at the right answer. There is no right answer or end-point. You’re now in the world of different lines of research that often contradict each other, and you must make sense of it.

Mistake 2: Not taking control!

No one will chase you to do extra reading, or make a start on your essay or revision. It’s exciting because you choose what to concentrate on and you can follow your interests, but its also a risk. What if you don’t realise you have 3 essays due next week, but also have a load of lectures and seminars then too…

If you make these mistakes, you risk spending a lot of time on learning the basics of your subject, but not going into enough detail to get a First Class mark. You also risk missing important deadlines, not preparing for lectures, seminars and practical classes, having to rush assignments and revision.

Don’t make these mistakes! Instead work to the new expectations around subject knowledge, and enjoy finding out about things that interest you. And, work out how to plan your studies and use your time effectively, so you can spend more time on the things you enjoy.

"It motivated me because they don't expect you to just know things right away and it's helpful for someone who may struggle more than most!"

This is backed up by research too! Maunder et al (2012) found that when students get to University, they have to make sense of expectations versus reality, and then figure out how to be a successful student.

This involves changing how they manage study, taking more personal responsibility and a more active approach. In other words, you need to take control of your learning by organising your time, working out where you can get help from, and actualling seeking out that help. The great thing with this according to Maunder et al’s research is that you will also believe in yourself and your abilities more, and be more confident.

‘it changes you as a person…it’s just an amazing life experience cos it just changes you so much and although its difficult and hard I’ve learnt so much about myself that I didn’t know a few years ago…you go through some bad times you go through some good times but they just help you…learn more about yourself and just become a better person I think…'

Female, second year (P.11, Maunder et al. 2012)

The most important things you can do to become a successful student is to understand what is expected of you and take control of your studies.

I was once that OVERWHELMED student. It sucks. I thought that I was on top of things, as I’d been rushing around and trying my best, but it still felt like other people knew what was going on, and I was just bumbling along for the ride.

I showed up to practical classes and tutorials without having prepared. I didn’t do the background reading for seminars, and would avoid eye-contact with my tutor, hoping I wouldn’t get asked a question.

I lost out on doing a year in industry because I got less than 55% in my first year exams and assignments.

First year marks don’t usually count towards your final degree award, but doing well is often essential in order to access other opportunities whilst at Uni. It sets you up for your entire degree, and opens doors for you.

Now I share what I’ve learnt, and what the research says, about making a successful start at University.

I’ve made it through a Masters, Post-Grad Certificate in Education, and a PhD, and I know exactly what you need to do to be a confident, pro-active and successful student.

When I started helping students adjust to study at university, I realised how empowering these simple techniques are.

The same realisation happened for Tracy, too.  It helps people regain control of their lives, shifts them from despair and panic, to inspired and motivated students. Which is why, we've spent years reading into the research and developing our own approaches.

“I have just received my portfolio back, and I'm really happy to let you know I received a mark of 82%. Thank you very much for your help and input as they certainly had a huge impact on this score!”

"This all sounds great, but…

…I don’t have time for this workshop!”

This will save you time! By studying effectively you will free up time! We combine the sayings “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Work Smarter, Not Harder”, for our approach:

“Study Smarter and Play Harder”

…I’ll get all of this support from my university.”

Unfortunately that usually isn’t the case. Staff at 140 universities in the UK have been on strike in the last year, because of low pay and excessive workloads. And if your teachers are struggling with workload, they will also struggle to help you adjust to university.

The MOST effective way of being a first class student, and enjoying your time at uni is to take control of your studies right from the start, by:

  • Understanding the expectations at university

  • Identifying and planning for your key deadlines, timetables and goals

  • Adapting your existing study skills to what works for you at university

  • Plus, join our community of students all starting university at the same time

Transform yourself into a confident University Student who knows exactly what you need to do, how to do it fast and effectively, so you can enjoy your time at Uni.

Your First Top Tip is to buy an Academic Wall Planner, such as this one.

As soon as you can, add important dates such as assignment deadlines, exam periods, and extra-curricular commitments too!

It means you can see any approaching deadlines, even if they are weeks away.  In the online training, we’ll look at how to use these effectively to plan your studies long term.

Study Smarter, Play Harder!

“Absolutely amazing in explaining what is academically expected and how to think critically!”
